about

BRU LEI
SELFIE will be distributed physically on CD and on all digital outlets 9/1/17 VIA
PUBLIC SCHOOL RECORDS
“As this is my first solo album in a few years, I take it very seriously that I am responsible for everything I say on here and that it represents me as a person. As a result I talk a lot about things that help me get through and life lessons that I have learned.”
Long-time emcee, Bru Lei talks about the inspiration for his forthcoming full-length album Selfie. To drop via Public School Records (Coolzey, Copywrite) on September 1st, the album is almost entirely produced by Noshess (pronounced nauseous) who has also laced tracks featuring Talib Kweli, Percee P and Solomon Childs.
Since releasing his last solo effort, (2009’s Shroom Crumbs EP) which was inspired by altered states of consciousness and debauchery while living the rap life, Lei has matured.
“I was doing some group projects like Crazy Hair and Midtown Marauders where I was having fun and playing a caricature of myself like most emcees do. However even though I didn’t have any new official solo projects out I was always touring. I started doing a lot of shows at high schools and I really became cautious about the words I put out there and how it influences younger listeners. It’s hard to do positive music that is entertaining or preachy but that was my goal for this one.”
With no curses or references to his hard-partying past, Selfie is still a jazzy and abstract conscious hip-hop album. On the opening track “Rap’s Not Real” (feat. Malia) he is very truthful about the illusion of the industry and the value of meditation over money. “Hello Moon” is self-discovery as a person and “True Love” is just as the title says.
There are also several high-grade emcee concept tracks including “P!!!!” (feat DJ Billy Lane) which is alliteration rap working as many words starting with P into the verse as possible. “M.C.” (feat N.O.N) peppers each line with a word that starts with M followed by a word starting with C.
“Brutang” features Wu-Tang Swordsman, Killah Priest. Of the collaboration Bru revealed “I first met Wu-Tang in Columbus around 1997 and have crossed paths, played shows with various members of that crew over the years. While living in Sacramento a few years back, I ran into Priest at a fest and told him I needed him on this track. It was my birthday actually and he rolled through and we wrote and recorded the track together that day.”
Bru Lei initially came to prominence as part of the Columbus, Ohio super-crew, Spitball. Spitball was helmed by DJ Przm (R.I.P) released several revered underground hip-hop singles in the late 90’s and also appeared on Blueprint’s Weight Room compilation.
Actively playing shows and touring Bru has recently appeared on shows alongside DJ Premier, Dead Prez, Royce Da 5'9, Raekwon and Ghostface Killah.
